Overview
Ionian is the first and most familiar of the seven modes - it is simply the major scale. Starting on the 1st degree of any major scale, Ionian carries a bright, resolved, and happy quality that has made it the foundation of Western music for centuries.
The Ionian mode features a major 3rd (giving it its bright quality), a perfect 5th, and a major 7th (a leading tone that strongly resolves back to the root). These characteristics create a strong sense of tonal gravity and resolution. The I–IV–V–I progression built from Ionian is arguably the most common chord progression in all of Western music.
Pro Tip: Think of Ionian as "home base." Every other mode can be understood as Ionian with one or more notes altered.
